Bear Ridge Trail

No bears last night. It is inevitable that there is going to be a bear ambush soon, they are all waiting till the end. We pitched our tent outside of VVR with some other people. When I woke up at six, no one else had woken up so I thought I would have a lie in. When I peeked my head out ten minutes later everyone had their tents down and their stuff packed. It became apparent that it doesn’t take ultra light backpackers 2 hours to break camp. We re organized our new food and went in for breakfast (eggs, hash-browns and toast with a side of biscuits and gravy )/ We then piled back into the shady cereal killer truck that took us back out to the ferry with 15 other backpackers. When we got to the sweltering hot desert where the lake started we saw the “ferry” was again one dingy. The driver said it would take several hours to get across so Brian and I hoofed it over the damn and up the bear ridge trail instead. We skipped about 4 miles of the JMT but bear ridge did it justice by making us walk straight uphill for 2 miles. Since we didn’t get going till 11 :00 we didn’t make it very far (10 miles). We had a great conversation the whole way and then camped by a river, did chores, laughed a lot, ready for bed. We are happier every day.
